Why do I need extra insurance for food delivery?

Most people's insurance on their cars, scooters or motorbikes only cover social use, or commuting to a single place of work. Delivering goods is not included and anyone doing this without the right cover is driving without insurance which is viewed as a very serious offence!

Doesn't business use insurance cover me?

No Business insurance would cover you for driving to see clients at different addresses, and carrying samples, but not for delivering any goods for sale. Unfair? Perhaps it is; but that's the law.

Why do some insurers charge so much?

Simply: the accident rate for delivery drivers is higher than it is for ordinary motorists. This is because the pressure is on to make multiple deliveries whilst the food is still hot and fresh; cold food is not very appetising; and rushing around at night is a recipe for an accident, particularly if the weather is bad.

So how do I get cheaper insurance?

The more quotes you get the greater your chance of finding cheaper premiums. However most companies that sell food delivery insurance are either insurance companies themselves (in which case you will only get one quote!) or brokers. Most brokers, however, are tied to either a single insurer or, at most, two or three; so the choice is limited there, too!
